Abstract
Reserpine, one of the rauwofian alkaloids, has a number of untoward side effects, such as inhibition or stimulation to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal and hypothalamu-spituitary-gonadal axis. The uterus, the target organ of the ovary is also effected by reserpine. Reserpine decreases the blood pressure by controlling catecholamine level in the cardiac tissue and the circulary system. Reserpine has been used as a hypotensive and diuretic not only for the toxemia of pregnancy, but also for the other conditions in the obstetrical and gynecological field.
An attemft was made to clarify the effects of reserpine on water and electrolytes in the tissue of the uterus and heart of mature female rabbits weighing around 2.0 kg of body weight.
A group of rabbits preconditioned with 50 L U. /kg of HCG and another with 1.5 mg/kg of reserpine plus 50 Lt. /kg of HCG were observed in 24 hours after conditioning.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The HCG preconditioned mature female rabbits showed acceleration of maturation of the follicles and ovulation in the ovaries, the reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group showed corpus luteum formation and cystic change of the corpus luteum.
2. The electrolyte levels in the serum of HCG preconditioned rabbits showed an increase of sodium, potassium and calcium levels and a decrease of chloride and magnesium levels. The level of chloride in the serum of the reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group was increased but the levels of potassium, calcium and magnesium in those groups were remarkably decreased.
3. The water, sodium and calcium levels in the uterine tissue of the HCG preconditioned mature female rabbits showed an increase in the contents compared to the normal group and a decrease in chlorid. sodium, and magnesium. In the reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group, the :chloride, potassium and magnesium levels of the uterus were remarkably decreased in comparison to. the HCG
administered group.
4. The contents of water and magnesium in the cardiac tissue of the HCG preconditioned mature female rabbits were decreased, wheras chloride, sodium, potassium, and calcium levels were increased. The water content in the cardiac tissue of the reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group was increased and the contents of the other electrolytes decreased. Among the electrolyte changes in the cardiac tissue by HCG injection, only the water and potassium contents were inhibited by reserpine injection.
5. While the water contents in the cardiac and uterine tissue of normal mature female rabbits showed no significant differences in it¢¥s level, the water content in the cardiac tissue of the HCG and reserpine plus HCG preconditioned was lower than that of the uterus.
E. The chloride contents in the cardiac tissue of the normal HCG, and reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group were lower than that of the uterine tissue
7. The sodium content of the cardiac tissue was lower than that of the uterus of normal rabbits while no significant differences was seen in the HCG and reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group.
8 The potassium content in the cardiac tissue of the normal, HCG, and reserpine plus HCG preconditioned were higher than that of the uterus.
9. There was no significant difference between the calcium contents in the normal cardiac and uterine tissue. But the calcium content in the cardiac tissue was lower than that of the uterus of the HCG and reserpine plus HCG preconditioned group.
10. The magnesium content in the cardiac tissue of the normal, HCG, and reserpine plus HCG pre-conditioned group showed markedly higher level than that of the uterus.
